This variation on a classic sour cocktail features tequila as the base spirit. As with all of my classic variations, from Negronis to sours, I try to keep the ingredients list to a minimum so that anyone can make these with just the ingredients on hand. The Tequila Sour cocktail is no different, and features just 4 ingredients!
Is it just a Margarita???
No! Where a margarita features either sour mix or lime juice as the citrus/sour element, the tequila sour uses JUST lemon juice. And where a margarita typically features a salt rim, this sour features egg white. These two ingredient changes lead to a tasting experience that is a little brighter, and with a creamier mouth-feel than the margarita.
What Ingredients do I Need for the Tequila Sour?
This sour cocktail variation uses all the typical ingredients of a normal sour, namely lemon juice, syrup, and egg white. For the syrup, in most of my tequila cocktails I prefer agave nectar. As they say, what grows together, goes together, and it doesn’t get much closer than coming from the same plant! However, since agave trends sweeter/syrupy, this necessitates a slight altering of the ratios of the ingredients to maintain a balanced cocktails. Since everyone has different tastes, feel free to use these ratios as a starting point and alter to suit your tastes.
Tequila Sour Cocktail Recipe
- 2oz Tequila Blanco
- 1oz lemon juice
- .75oz agave nectar
- 1 egg white
Add all ingredients to shaker, add a protein blender ball, and dry shake for 20-30 seconds. Add ice and wet shake for an additional 10-15 seconds to add water content and tie everything together. Pour into a coupe glass and allow to sit for 1 minute before serving so the foam has a chance to separate from the liquid.
