For this variation on the classic Negroni, we will be using all the same spirits. However, in the Modern Negroni recipe, the ratios are slightly altered to create a more balanced cocktail which still retains that same Negroni charm.
How Is The Modern Negroni Recipe Different?
The only real difference here is in the ratios. All of the ingredients you have on hand for a classic Negroni will work. Most people love the ease of the equal parts original recipe, however this leads to a cocktail that is out of balance. Campari is a bully in any cocktail that uses it, and the vermouth often gets lost in the botanical nature of the gin. This botanical aspect is then covered up by the overwhelming Campari. To fix this, we’ve altered the ratio so that the gin is more present, and backed off the Campari. You still get the same floral and bitter notes, but now you can also enjoy some of the character the gin and vermouth bring to the table.
How To Make A Modern Negroni
To make the Modern Negroni, you’re going to use 1.5 oz of gin instead of 1, and .75oz of Campari instead of 1. The vermouth will remain the same at 1oz. This allows the gin and vermouth to really speak in the cocktail, getting out of the shadow of the Campari. Use this as an opportunity to really experiment with different gins and find what you like!
Modern Negroni Recipe
- 1.5oz gin
- 1oz sweet vermouth (I use Dolin Rouge or Rosemont Capitoline)
- .75oz Campari
Combine all spirits in a mixing glass, fill halfway with ice (should barely cover the liquid) and stir for 10-15 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass with a single large cube. Garnish with orange peel after expressing.
