What Is A Mezcal Sour Cocktail?

A mezcal sour cocktail is just like another drink from the sour family. It consists of a sour component (lemon), a sweet component (agave syrup), and alcohol, in this case Tequila and Mezcal. All in all, it is reminiscent of a tequila sour, as you can definitely taste that classic tequila flavor under the lemon, but adds the smokey tones of mezcal to the mix!

How To Make A Mezcal Sour Cocktail

Making one of these bad boys couldn’t be simpler. You need just 5 ingredients, some ice, a shaker and a glass to put it in. The most difficult part of this recipe is balancing the mezcal with the other flavors. Mezcal, like Campari, tends to be a bully in most cocktails it’s featured in, so it’s easy to over-do it and end up with a cocktail that is too heavy on the smokey tone instead of nice and balanced. The standard sour calls for 2oz of your base spirit. For this variation, we keep the 2oz, but instead of having it all be straight mezcal, we’re using 1.5oz tequila blanco. You still get the agave spirit tang, while making sure the mezcal is playing with the rest of the team! We also use agave instead of the simple syrup from a normal sour, as I’m a big fan of “if it grows together, it goes together!” However, this necessitates altering the ratios as agave syrup is actually sweeter than normal simple syrup, and you can end up with a cocktail that is overly sweet and syrupy if you’re not careful.

Mezcal Sour Cocktail Recipe

  • 1.5oz Tequila Blanco
  • .5oz Mezcal
  • 1oz lemon juice
  • .75oz agave syrup
  • 1 egg white

Add all ingredients to shaker, add a protein blender ball, and dry shake for 20-30 seconds. Add ice and wet shake for an additional 10-15 seconds to add water content and tie everything together. Pour into a coupe glass and allow to sit for 1 minute before serving so the foam has a chance to separate from the liquid.
