Dark and Stormy Recipe
- 2 oz Lyon Dark Rum
- 6oz ginger beer
- we use 5oz club soda and 1oz Pickett’s Hot and Spicy Ginger Syrup
- Lime
Fill a collins glass half full with ice, add the ginger beer and stir until chilled. Using a bar spoon held upside-down just over the top of the ice, gently pour the rum over the spoon. This creates a nice separation of colors in the finished cocktail. Finish by squeezing half a lime over the drink and setting it neatly on top of the liquid/ice.
About Lyon Rum
Lyon Rum is a premium rum brand that is crafted at the Lyon Rum Distillery in St. Michaels, Maryland. Their rums are made from 100% cane sugar, which is sourced from Florida, Louisiana, and the Caribbean. The cane sugar is then fermented and distilled in small batches, resulting in a smooth and flavorful rum that is perfect for cocktails like the Dark and Stormy. The distillery is open for tours and tastings, so if you find yourself in the St. Michaels area, be sure to stop by and check out their award-winning rums.
History of the Dark and Stormy
The Dark and Stormy cocktail originated in Bermuda in the early 20th century. It was originally made with Gosling’s Black Seal rum, which is still the preferred rum for many bartenders today. The name “Dark and Stormy” is said to have been inspired by the color of the rum, which is dark like a storm cloud, and the spicy kick of the ginger beer.
Dark and Stormy Variations
A Dark and Stormy is the perfect combination of sweet, spicy, and tart flavors that make it a go-to choice for many. However, if you’re looking to experiment, look no further. We’ve compiled a list of five creative variations to elevate your cocktail game and impress your guests.
- Spiced and Stormy
Add a touch of warm spice to the classic Dark and Stormy by infusing the rum with aromatic spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. To create the infusion, simply add the spices to a bottle of dark rum and let it sit for at least 48 hours. Strain the spices out before mixing with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime. Garnish with a cinnamon stick for an added visual appeal.
- Stormy Night
For a sultry twist on the classic, try the Stormy Night. Replace the traditional dark rum with a blend of dark rum and coffee liqueur, such as Kahlúa or Tia Maria. The coffee liqueur adds a rich depth of flavor, while the ginger beer provides the kick and effervescence. Finish with a twist of lime for a burst of brightness.
- Fruity Dark and Stormy
Give your Dark and Stormy a fruity makeover by adding a splash of your favorite fruit juice or puree. Mango, pineapple, or passion fruit are excellent choices that complement the dark rum and ginger beer. For a more tropical experience, try using coconut water instead of ginger beer. This variation is perfect for sipping poolside or at a beachside bar.
- Dark and Fiery
Turn up the heat with this spicy variation of the classic. Muddle a few slices of fresh jalapeño or habanero pepper at the bottom of the glass before adding the dark rum and ginger beer. The spiciness from the peppers pairs wonderfully with the ginger beer’s zesty kick. If you’re feeling adventurous, try using a ginger-infused or spiced rum for an extra burst of flavor.
- Stormy Sailor
For a more herbal twist on the Dark and Stormy, try adding a splash of elderflower liqueur, such as St-Germain, to the mix. The sweet, floral notes of the elderflower liqueur blend seamlessly with the dark rum and ginger beer, creating a sophisticated and refreshing cocktail. Top with a sprig of fresh mint or a twist of lemon for a stunning garnish.
