The Gin Sour cocktail is a must-have in your arsenal for making cocktails at home. It is a riff on the classic sour cocktail formula, using gin as the base spirit.

What is a Gin Sour cocktail?

This cocktail is part of the family of cocktails known as sours, like the Whiskey Sour and many others. The basic sour cocktail recipe typically involves a base spirit, here the gin, a sour element, typically lemon juice, and a sweetener in the form of a sugar syrup.

How To Make A Gin Sour

Making this cocktail, like any of the “simple sours” as I call them, is very easy. You’ll need only 4 ingredients, which most people have on hand at home anyway. It’s comprised of gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white. The key here, and with any sour containing egg white, is to dry shake the cocktail first to really foam the egg, and THEN add the ice to chill it. This will give you a thick froth that slowly rises to the top of the cocktail and softens the sip. My favorite strategy for dry shaking a cocktail is to use one of those little protein blender whisk balls that you use in your protein shakes. Just throw it in the shaker and shake away for 15-20 seconds before adding ice.

Gin Sour Cocktail Recipe

  • 2oz London dry gin
  • .75oz lemon juice
  • .75oz simple syrup
  • 1 egg white

Add all ingredients to shaker, add a protein blender ball, and dry shake for 20-30 seconds. Add ice and wet shake for an additional 10-15 seconds to add water content and tie everything together. Pour into a coupe glass and allow to sit for 1 minute before serving so the foam has a chance to separate from the liquid.
